Case Study

GIS Development for Canton Township 2010 Brownfield Redevelopment

Redevelopment Authority of Washington County, Pennsylvania

Date: July 2006 to May 2007

Cost: $12,000

Background:

Canton 2010 is an exciting planning initiative being undertaken to develop a master plan for the area of the township near the I-70 Exit 16 (Jessop Place) in Washington County. Working with Canton Township Supervisors, the Planning Commission and the Redevelopment Authority of Washington County, consultant assistance will help craft a master development plan.  The product of this six month study will include a development plan, a phasing plan and financing strategies.

Senate’s Engineering Company’s Responsibilities:

Senate’s responsibilities and deliverables were to provide all mapping services for the duration of the study.  This involves preparing digital parcel map layers from existing tax maps, creating a building footprint layer from aerial photography with five foot contour intervals, mapping of environmental conditions such as floodplains, wetlands, slope, and environmental hazards, creating project boundaries, location of streets and highways, and utilities within the project area.

Senate calculated square footage of current land uses to be utilized in assessment of future development.  Among the maps Senate created were: Boundary, Existing Land Use, Future Land Use, Structural Conditions, Property Inventory, Environmental Conditions, Proposed Zoning, and Utility. Senate’s maps were utilized in public and management meetings alike, as well as, draft and final reports.

In addition to the mapping requirements, Senate was also responsible for cost estimates of construction of new roadways, interchanges, flyover bridge, and at-grade crossings which were based on the conceptual master development plan.
